2.2 Adjustable Dumbbell
Dumbbells with adjustable overall weight can be modified by adding or removing counterweights or changing gear settings, available in various types including screw-lock, snap-fit, and quick-adjust designs.
2.3 Structural Integrity
After testing under rated load, drop impact, friction, and fatigue conditions, the dumbbells exhibited no defects such as cracking, deformation, detachment, loosening, or fracture that could compromise safety; their structural dimensions and assembly status comply with standard requirements.
2.4 Surface Safety Performance
The dumbbell surface is free from sharp burrs, sharp edges, or damaged coatings; it meets the required standards for slip resistance, corrosion resistance, and anti-detachment performance, with no hazardous chemical residues posing risks to human health.
3. Core Safety Technical Requirements
3.1 Material Safety Requirements
The main material of dumbbells must comply with the general safety standards for fitness equipment, featuring a dense and uniform texture free from inherent defects such as pores, air holes, cracks, or impurities; production using recycled inferior waste materials is strictly prohibited. Surface protective coatings (e.g., electroplating, rubber coating, or plastic immersion) must be non-toxic and harmless, free from excessive heavy metals or harmful volatile substances, conform to environmental safety regulations for civilian fitness equipment, and pose no irritation or toxicity risks when in prolonged contact with human skin.
Specific requirements for various materials: Cast iron must exhibit uniform hardness and meet toughness standards, with resistance to brittle fracture; the electroplated layer must demonstrate strong adhesion and corrosion resistance; rubber-coated materials should be odorless, wear-resistant, and age-resistant, without brittleness at low temperatures or softening/peeling at high temperatures.
3.2 Appearance and Structural Safety Requirements
All edges and corners of dumbbell products must be rounded and chamfered to eliminate sharp burrs or pointed edges, thereby preventing cuts or injuries caused by accidental impacts. Hexagonal dumbbells shall feature a anti-rolling structure to ensure stable placement on flat surfaces without spontaneous rolling.
The handle surface must feature a compliant anti-slip design with uniform and complete anti-slip textures or coatings, free from localized protrusions, depressions, or detachment, ensuring comfortable grip and stable anti-slip performance. The connection between the handle and the weight block must be tightly integrated without looseness, gaps, or misalignment; the integrated dumbbell shall exhibit no joint cracks, while the adjustable dumbbell locking mechanism must provide tight closure and precise positioning.
3.3 Weight Accuracy Requirements
The deviation between the rated weight and actual weight of dumbbells must be strictly controlled to ensure training standardization and safety: for weights up to 10 kg, the deviation shall be ≤±2%; for weights above 10 kg, the deviation shall be ≤±1.5%. The weight difference between two units within the same set shall not exceed 1% of the rated weight to prevent joint injuries caused by uneven force distribution during exercise. All adjustable dumbbell weight levels must have clear markings, with actual weights matching the indicated values exactly, without any missing or mislabeled weights.
3.4 Safety Requirements for Connection and LockingThe locking components of adjustable dumbbells-such as screws, latches, and gear locks-must be precisely matched to ensure no shaking, displacement, or loosening after tightening. Conventional manual locking mechanisms must not exhibit automatic loosening or weight disc detachment under normal training loads; rapid adjustment mechanisms should allow smooth gear switching with secure engagement, free from jamming or disengagement issues. All fasteners must be free from thread slippage, deformation, or corrosion defects.
3.5 Requirements for Physical Durability and Resistance to Damage
The dumbbells must possess excellent impact resistance, fatigue resistance, and wear resistance to meet the demands of high-frequency daily training as well as minor accidental drops. The rubber-coated or electroplated surfaces must be wear-resistant and scratch-resistant, with no extensive peeling, flaking, or corrosion occurring during prolonged use; the main structure must withstand repeated loads under rated loads without deformation, cracking, or fracture.
3.6 Chemical Safety Requirements
The surface coating of dumbbells, rubber components, and other auxiliary materials, as well as the content of heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium) and volatile organic compounds, must comply with national environmental standards for fitness equipment. No toxic or harmful substances should be released; there should be no health risks during daily handling or contact, and no hazardous gases should be emitted under high-temperature or humid conditions.
4. Testing Items and Methods
4.1 Inspection of External Structure
The inspection is conducted using a combination of visual examination, tactile inspection, and caliper measurement. Visual inspection examines the product's overall appearance to confirm the absence of cracks, damage, coating detachment, corrosion, or deformation defects; tactile inspection checks surfaces and edges for the presence of sharp burrs or sharp corners; measurement of handle diameter, counterweight dimensions, and rounded corner radii verifies that structural dimensions comply with product design specifications and standards; static testing evaluates the hexagonal dumbbell's anti-rolling performance by placing it on a flat surface to ensure no rolling or tipping occurs.
4.2 Weight Precision Testing
Use electronic weighing equipment with a precision of no less than 0.01 kg to perform measurements under standard conditions of ambient temperature, dryness, and absence of wind. Weigh each individual dumbbell separately and the pair together, record the actual weights, calculate the deviations from the rated weights and the differences between the two dumbbells, and verify compliance with weight accuracy standards. For adjustable dumbbells, test the counterweights at each setting level and confirm that the labeled values match the actual weights.
4.3 Testing of Connection Locking Performance
For adjustable dumbbells, after locking the position and tightening the screws, apply manually the standard training range of torque, pushing/pulling, and shaking forces for 30 seconds, then observe whether the locking mechanism exhibits loosening, displacement, disengagement, or detachment of the weight plate. Repeat the position switching and locking procedures 20 times to test structural stability; failure to encounter jamming, malfunction, or loosening indicates compliance. For fixed-weight dumbbells, prioritize inspecting the firmness of the connection between the handle and the weight plate; absence of gaps, looseness, or cracks meets the requirements.
4.4 Fall Impact Test
In accordance with the requirements of T/CSSGA 1040-2023, drop tests shall be conducted. The dumbbell shall be raised to a standard height of 1.2 m and allowed to fall freely onto a flat, hard concrete surface; each individual drop constitutes one test cycle, with a total of five repeated cycles performed. Upon completion, inspection shall confirm that the dumbbell body exhibits no cracks, fractures, or significant deformation; its surface coating shows no extensive peeling or detachment; and the counterweight assembly remains secure without loosening or detachment-this constitutes compliance with impact performance requirements. High-frequency commercial dumbbells must additionally undergo an additional 50,000 cycles of mild reciprocating drop fatigue testing, after which the structure must remain intact without failure defects.
4.5 Wear and Corrosion Resistance Tests
Wear resistance testing: The dumbbell handles and surface coatings were subjected to reciprocating friction tests using a wear tester. After 1,000 standard cycles, the surfaces showed no exposure of underlying material, damage, or severe wear, and anti-slip performance remained significantly intact. Corrosion resistance testing: Electroplated dumbbells and bare metal dumbbells underwent a 48-hour salt spray test, demonstrating no rust formation, stains, or oxide peeling; rubber-coated dumbbells passed high-low temperature cycling tests from-20°C to 60°C without exhibiting brittleness, softening, or adhesive detachment.
4.6 Chemical Safety Testing
Entrust a third-party authoritative testing institution to conduct harmful substance analysis on materials such as dumbbell coatings and rubber components using professional methods including spectral analysis and gas chromatography, verify whether indicators like heavy metals and volatile organic compounds comply with national standard limits, and issue a compliance test report.
5. Quality Assessment Rules
5.1 Eligibility Criteria
All test items for the dumbbell products fully comply with the technical requirements specified in this specification as well as corresponding national and industry standards, with no non-conformities detected. These products are hereby certified as qualified and may be manufactured, distributed, and put into use without restriction.
5.2 Non-conformity Determination
Any product meeting any of the following criteria shall be deemed non-compliant and prohibited from leaving the factory or being sold for use:
The appearance exhibits sharp edges, burrs, cracks, severe deformation, and other direct safety hazards;
The weight deviation exceeds the standard limit; the difference in weight between the two dumbbells is beyond acceptable levels.;
The locking mechanism fails, resulting in issues such as loosening, disengagement, or detachment of the counterweight.
Structural damage, fractures, or extensive coating detachment occur after drop tests and fatigue tests, rendering the device unusable.
The wear resistance and corrosion resistance fail to meet standards, making it prone to damage, aging, and failure in the short term.
The levels of chemical hazardous substances exceed permissible limits, posing health risks.
5.3 Re-examination Rules
If minor non-conformities (non-structural safety hazards) are identified in a single sampling inspection, double the number of samples for retesting; if all items pass retesting, the batch is deemed compliant. If non-conformities persist after retesting, the entire batch is directly classified as non-compliant and must be either reworked or scrapped. For serious issues such as structural safety defects or excessive chemical levels, the batch is immediately deemed non-compliant and no retesting is required.
6. Product Identification, Packaging and Storage Requirements
6.1 Product Identification
Each dumbbell must be clearly labeled with the rated weight, manufacturer, production date, material composition, applicable standard code, and safety warnings. The labels shall be securely attached and resistant to wear or detachment. For adjustable dumbbells, the corresponding weights for each adjustment level, proper adjustment procedures, and safety precautions must be explicitly indicated.
6.2 Packaging Requirements
The factory packaging of the product shall possess shock resistance, impact resistance, and wear resistance to prevent deformation, coating damage, or structural loosening during transportation. The packaging shall include the product certification, test reports, user manual, and safety warning instructions, with clear labeling of contraindications and maintenance requirements.
6.3 Transportation and Storage
During transportation of dumbbells, avoid severe impacts, stacking compression, and strictly prohibit throwing or heavy pressure. The storage environment should be dry, well-ventilated, and free from corrosive gases; prolonged exposure to moisture or direct sunlight must be avoided to prevent product rusting, adhesive layer aging, or structural deformation. The stacking height during storage should be appropriate to prevent compression damage.
7. Specifications for Routine Sampling and Maintenance Testing
Fitness facilities and manufacturing enterprises shall establish a regular safety inspection mechanism for dumbbells, conducting monthly inspections of appearance, structure, and locking performance, along with quarterly verification tests of weight accuracy. During routine use, if any issues such as cracking, deformation, extensive coating detachment, locking failure, or abnormal weight are detected, the dumbbell must be immediately discontinued from use and isolated; continued use is strictly prohibited. Regular cleaning, rust prevention, and tightening maintenance should be performed to extend product lifespan and ensure operational safety.
8. Supplementary Provisions
